This evening’s Erev Shabbat Service and surrounding events, presented by the Cooperative Jewish Council, will take place at Temple Anshe Sholom in Olympia Fields. Food, drink, good times, greeting old friends from other congregations, begin at 6:30 pm. Services at 7:30 pm.

Tomorrow morning, on the other hand, we will have our regular summer Shabbat Morning service, in the Garfein Wing. Rabbi Dreyfus is scheduled to lead the service; Jerry Levine is scheduled as the Cantorial Soloist. Niki Cummings will read Torah in honor of her birthday. Niki and Susan and Barry Bayer (in honor of the Bayers’ wedding anniversary) will host a light lunch. Sort of Bagels without the Bible.
The Parsha is Numbers 13:1?15:41. Moses sends out spies to report on the land of Canaan, which G-d has given to them. Everyone agrees it is good land, but 10 say it would be impossible to conquer as giants who live there would have to be overcome. The 10 start a mini-rebellion suggesting that the Jews turn around and return to Egypt. They die The two spies who weren’t overwhelmed by the difficulty lived.
The Parsha finishes with a discussion of laws concerning offerings, the story of a wood gatherer who breaks the Sabbath and is stoned for it, and instructions that the children of ISrael should make fringes on the border of their garments
