This evening’s erev Shabbat service will be conducted by Carole Fefferman, beginning at 8:00 pm.
Tomorrow morning’s Shabbat Service conducted by Barry D. Bayer will begin at 10:00 am. Carole Fefferman will be the chazanit. Carole, Ernie Ratowiz, Jerry Levine and Niki Cummings will read from the Torah.
The Parsha is Numbers 8:1 - 12:16 We begin with the specification of a seven branch silver candlestick, then moves to the cleaning up of the Levites, who G-d has taken for himself in lieu of all of the first born males. We then learn that the Tabernacle is marked with a Cloud during the day and a pillar of fire, at night, and remains in place as long as these signs remain. When these signs move, the Tabernacle (and all of the Jews) follow it. Silver trumpets are specified send a message of alarm, and also to gather the leaders of the community together. The people, getting bored by Manna every day, demand Meat. Moses is tired of hearing such, and G-d places the burden on the leaders of the community, and agrees to send so much meat (in the form of birds) that the people will be sick with the excess. We end with Miriam’s punishment of Leprosy (or some other skin disease) because she claimed of the parentage of the woman her brother (Moses) had married, and is exiled from the community as long as her affliction remains. Moses prays to G-d to heal her, and eventually she is healed.
The Haftarah, is Zechariah 2:14 - 4:7
