SHABBAT:
Friday, January 11, 7:30 p.m. Family Shabbat Service featuring the Youth Choir, Birthday blessings, and of course, a story.
Saturday, January 12, 10:00 a.m. Shabbat Morning Service, followed by “Bible Bagels” – our monthly Torah discussion over Kiddush lunch. All are welcome, and no prior knowledge is required.
Friday, January 18, 8:00 p.m. Shabbat Evening Service featuring the Adult Choir and Anniversary blessings. It is Shabbat Shirah, the Sabbath of Song!
Saturday, January 19, 10:00 a.m. Shabbat Morning Service.
Friday, January 25, 6:15 p.m. Shabbat Evening Service. Come for an early service, and then relax over Shabbat dinner at home or with friends.
Saturday, January 26, 10:00 a.m. Shabbat Morning Service.
TEMPLE BUSINESS
The monthly Board Meeting is Monday, January 14 at 8:00 p.m.
LEARNING
United Religious School resumed classes on Sunday, January 6th. Classes continue regularly now on Sundays and Wednesdays.
“Lunch & Learn” – a monthly discussion of “Reform Judaism” magazine will meet Thursday, January 17 at 12:15 p.m. in the Garfien Wing. Bring your lunch, and we will provide beverages and dessert. Also bring your copy of “Reform Judaism.”
Tu BiShvat Seder, presented by the Sisterhood, will be Sunday, January 20 at 2:00 p.m. Join Debby Levinson and others on a spiritual journey to celebrate the New Year of the Trees. Taste a variety of fruits from different agricultural species. $3 per person. RSVP with the form you got in the mail, or to Debby Levinson, 708-799-0480.
SISTERHOOD RECEPTION & IPO CONCERT
The Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra concert on Saturday evening, January 19, 8:00 p.m., will feature music of Mozart, Stravinsky, and Beethoven. Our Sisterhood is having a delicious pre-concert reception at the home of Marilynn & Sol Tannebaum at 5:30 p.m. RSVP by January 11 to Eila Koltun. You may use your own IPO subscription ticket or one of the block of tickets that Sisterhood has reserved.
Rabbi, Author Douglas Kohn To Speak January 14 on “Life, Faith, and Cancer”
Rabbi Douglas Kohn, of Congregation Emanu El in San Bernardino, California, will speak at Temple Beth-El in Munster, IN at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 14. Rabbi Kohn has been active locally and nationally in programs of social justice, community relations, and Israel, and has published many articles on American Jewish history. After his diagnosis and treatment for cancer three years ago, Rabbi Kohn has edited a book on Judaism and cancer, titled Life, Faith, and Cancer: Jewish Journeys Through Diagnosis, Treatment, and Recovery, published by the URJ Press. The book includes the stories and teachings of Rabbi Kohn and eighteen other Jewish religious leaders who also have or have had cancer. Copies of Life, Faith, and Cancer will be available for purchase at Rabbi Kohn’s lecture.
Condolences:
We extend our sympathy to the family and friends of Muriel Folb, wife of Beth Sholom past-president Leon (Larry) Folb, who died recently. The funeral was Monday, January 7.
