The Parsha, Sh’mot, Exodus 1:1?6:1, begins the second book of the Torah. The book begins with the names (Sh’mot) of the sons of Israel who came down to Egypt with Jacob. We learn that Joseph and his brothers became numerous and strong, and a new king, who knew nothing of Joseph (and the services he had performed for the country) ascended the throne. And afraid of this foreign group, he enslaved them, and instructed the non-Jewish midwives active in the Jewish quarters to kill boys born of the Jews, and let the girls live. One of the boys was Moses, but the midwives let him live, but put him in the river, where one of Pharoah’s daughters eventually got him and raised him.
Moses struck a taskmaster who was beating a Jewish slave, ran off into the desert, had an epiphany in his contact with the burning bush, where he learns that he has been selected to lead the Jews out of Egypt.
The Haftarah is Isaiah 27:6–28:13; 29:22?23
