Shabbat Shalom - 6 Tevet

This evening’s Erev Shabbat Service, conducted by Susan Bayer, will begin at 8:00 pm. Nancy Friedman will be the Cantorial Soloist. The Oneg Shabbat will feature a genuine Bobka, prepared according to the New York Times recipe.

Tomorrow’s Shabbat Morning servioce will be conducted by Barry Bayer, beginning at 10:00 am. Fawn Gottlieb will be the Cantorial Soloist. Jerry Levine, Barry Bayer, Niki Cummings and Judy Levy will read from the Torah.

The Parsha is Vayigash, Genesisa 44:18 - 47:27. Joseph plays a sadistic game with his brothers, putting a valuable object into Benjamin’s pack, accusing the entire group of stealing it, then saying that only the person in whose possession it was found would be punished. WHen it is found in Benjamin’s possession Joseph says that everyone else can go home, but Benjamin must stay. This upsets the boys, as Jacob, now called Israel, would he very upset, and Judah offers to stay instead of Benjamin. At which point Joseph reveals himself to his brothers, and tells them to go get their father and bring the rest of the family to Egypt, where Joseph controls lots of food and is a wealthy man. Israel is overjoyed when he hears that Joseph is still alive, and they hurry down to Egypt.With Phraroah’s approval Israel and his family settles in the area of Goshen, as shepard’s of their own flocks and some of Pharoah’s, and became even more wealthy.
