Tomorrow morning’s Shabbat Service conducted by Niki Cummings will beginat 10:00 am in the Garfein Wing. Barry Bayer will be the cantorial soloist. Doug, Eila and Ben Koltun will read from the Torah and Ben will report on his trip to Washington.

Thia week’s Parsha is Va-et’chanan , Deuteronomy 3:23–7:11. Moses continues his lecture to the Israelites, about his pleading with G-d, and reminds the Israelites to obey the rules that G-d has set forth, emphasizing the dangers of ignoring them and what G-d will do if G-d gets angry. Moses continues with a reprise of the Aseret HaDebrot, the Ten Commandments, in slightly different terms as given the first time in Exodus 20. The Parsha ends with the words of the Sh’ma and the beginnings of the V’ahavtah, and a final reminder that the Israelites were chosen as a special people and therefore have special responsibilities to G-d.

The Haftarah reading is Isaiah 40:1–26, which begins with the soothing words that name this Shabbat
Nachamu, ??????? ???????, ??????–??????, ??????????…”Comfort ye, Comfort ye my people, says your G-d.” Fresh from the disturbing words of Jeremiah and reading Lamentations on Tisha B’Av, the Haftarah begins the readings of consolation ultimately leading to Sl’ichot, Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.

We will discuss all of this and more after services with an extended Kiddush in our summer version of Bible & Bagels.
