The Parsha is Sh’lach L’cha, Numbers 13:1?15:41. On G-d’s instruction’s Moses sends out a reprentative from each tribe an advanced team to gether intelligence about the land of Canaan. These 12 “spies” do their work for 40 days and report back to the israelites. It is, indeed, a land flowing with milk and honey, but 10 of the 12 report that the inhabitants are fierce and an invasion would not succeed. Two — Caleb and Joshua — report that, with G-d’s help, the Israelites could conquer the land. But, of course, the people grumble again, being very negative about the entire enterprise and siding with the 10. G-d becomes angry and is ready to toss in the towel, but with Moses’s intervention agrees only that the grumblers would spend a year in the desert for each of the 40 days that the epies were working, that the 10 would be killed, but that after the 40 years of wandering, the Israelites, with G-d’s help, would conquer the land. And so it happened.
