This evening we will have a Simchat Erev Shabbat (formerly “Camp” Shabbat) Service conducted (and accompanied on her Guitar) by Rabbi Dreyfus. The Service will begin at 8:00 PM
Tomorrow morning’s Shabbat Service for this Shabbat Shekalim, the last Shabbat before Rosh Chodesh Adar (this coming Monday and Tuesday) will be conducted by Rabbi Dreyfus, beginning at 10:00 AM. Judy Levy will be the Cantorial Soloist.
We will read Torah from Parsha Misphatim, Exodus 21:1 - 24:18. The special traditional Maftir for Shabbat Shekalim is Exodus 30:11 - 16. The Parsha begins with a couple of chapters of laws about slavery with Hebrew slaves, a little criminal law, a little tort law (including the famous “eye for an eye” thing) then moves back to the story. Moses, Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the Hebrew elders went part way up the mountain, built an alter, did some sacrifices and had dinner. Moses began throwing blood around (as part of the scarifices) and half the blood on his relatives and friends. The latter waited for 40 days and 40 nights while Moses went up and disappeared into the Cloud, where the rest could not go.
The special maftir refers to a tax of one half shekel each to be paid by males over 20 years of age.
See you at services!
