Tomorrow morning’s service for Shabbat Nachamu, will be conducted by Rabbi Dreyfus. Nicki Cummings will be the cantorial soloist. The parasha is Va-er’chanan, Deuteronomy 3:23–7:11. Moses continues his peroration before his people, relating what has happened and what will happen, even though he will not be allowed to participate in crossing the Jordan and conquering and expelling the peoples of seven kingdoms. (And whatever else you do, don’t marry their daughters.) We have a second telling of the Ten Commandments, and some familiar text that has become a part of every Jewish service.
The haftarah, Isaiah 40:1 - 26, is the first of the so-called Haftarahs of Consolation, beginning immediately after Tisha B’av, a definite sign that S’lichot and Rosh HaShanah are coming.
