This evening’s Erev Shabbat Family Service, conducted by Rabbi Dreyfus, begins at 7:30 PM. A busy evening will include blessings for children with birthdays in May, Graduation of our Eighth Graders and honoring of the Youth Music Department including the Youth Choir and Director Nancy Friedman
Tomorrow morning’s Shabbat service will begin at 10:00 AM and will be conducted by Rabbi Dreyfus.
The parasha is Emor, Leviticus 21:1–24:23.
We begin with special rules for the Priests (the children of Aaron) and the Levites, regarding being close to the dead, women who are not virgins, and persons with any blemish at all — There is even a special rule for daughters of priests, who should be killed by burning if they become prostitutes — and rules about purity and holiness. We continue on with another recitation of laws regarding the Sabbath and other holy days, and end with summaries of a couple of criminal cases, then general criminal — someone who blasphemes and someone who kills another shall each be killed — and the “eye for eye, tooth for tooth” laws.
The URJ Commentary refers to Jake and Elwood Blues who were on a “Mission from God”. As Emor makes clear, the Jewish People, too, are on a Mission From God.
