This evening’s Family Erev Shabbat Services, conducted by Rabbi Dreyfus with music from the Junior Choir led by Nancy Friedman, begins at 7:30 PM.
Tomorrow’s Shabbat Morning service begins at 10:00 and will be conducted by Rabbi Dreyfus. The parasha is Shimini, Leviticus 9:1 - 11:47. We begin with more priestly sacrifices and rules of good conduct. Then two of Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu make an offering of strange fire before the Lord, apparently not a good thing to do, because they are soon devoured by the fire. This does not make Aaron very happy, but he lives with it. Finally, are the rules of the animals that can or cannot be eaten. Remember: on the land, chew cud and divided hoof kosher; in the water, fins and scales, kosher. No cud, undivided hooves, no fins, no scales, traif.
There are no set out rules for birds, but lists of the abominations are given. Insects, creepy crawly and go “bump in the night”, presumably, traif. Flying insects with jointed legs above the feet —Locust, cricket, and grasshopper? — kosher.
