This evening’s Erev Shabbat Service for Shabbat Shira will begin at 8:00 PM
Tomorrow’s Shabbat morning service will begin at 10:00 AM.
The parasha is Beshalach, Exodus 13:17 - 17:16, featuring the song at the sea.
G-d leads the Jews out of Egypt, not the short way up the Mediteranian shore, but the long way, across the Red Sea (Sea of Reeds?), showing the way with a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. G-d hardens Pharoh’s heart, again, and Pharoh sends hundreds of chariots after the Jews. G-d causes the sea to split, the Jews cross on dry land, the chariots race after them, the sea resumes its normal course and the Egyptians are drowned.
Moses and the Children of Israel sang the famous Song at the Sea, commemorating the event and Miriam and the women danced. And the Jews began their adventures on their journey, with G-d providing bread and water, when necessary, and, under Moses and Joshua, won the battle with Amalek.
But the war with Amalek will, the Torah promises, continue from generation to generation.
